Tropical Cyclone Nargis hit the Southeast Asian country of Myanmar, also known as Burma with winds of up to 120 mph,
leaving thousands dead and hundreds of thousands more people homeless. Relief organizations are responding to this
crisis through a variety of mechanisms, including emergency medical assistance, transitional shelter, provision of
non-food items, and debris clearing.
The remnants of Hurricane Stan combined with the normal Central American rainy season sent rivers of mud flowing
across the central Guatemalan highlands. The landslide is believed to be the worst single disaster in the area; several
days of flooding have killed hundreds in Central America and southern Mexico. The survivors are at risk of malnutrition
and water borne diseases.
Tens of thousands are dead in Pakistan, India and Afghanistan and many more are injured or trapped in
buildings that were reduced to rubble as a result of the earthquake. Victims are in desperate need of

and extreme weather have taken their tolls, leaving several regions of the
country with less than a one-day supply of blood. Many other areas are
experiencing critical shortages of O-negative, the only universal blood type
that everyone can use.
