Afghan Relief Efforts

Afghanistan has made great strides in rebuilding its country since the fall of the Taliban - from electing members of its new transitional government, to opening more than 3,500 new schools across the country. But, even as Afghanistan moves forward, it remains in a precarious position, with many challenges ahead, including access to education, basic health services, clean water and sanitation, and other services.

Humanitarian crises continue to plague the country. Three years of drought have overwhelmed large parts of the country, forcing families to endure water scarcity, limited access to food, and debilitating debt. Years of war have left many homes and land destroyed, requiring the rebuilding of irrigation systems, houses, wells, and roads.

War has also left a big effect on education. Few children have received formal educations, with many girls - denied access to schools under the Taliban- unable to read and write. Literacy rates in general are among the lowest in the world for men, women, and children.
