Historic Travel

Instead of battling the crowds at Disney World this summer, you could witness a live Civil War battle reenacted before your eyes. Or, your family could explore ancient Native American cliff dwellings in the Grand Canyon. Whatever era of America's past interests you, historical travel is an exciting and educational way to spend your summer vacation.

After the events of September 11, Americans are expressing a renewed interest in our country's heritage. This summer, millions of families will make cultural or historical activities part of their vacation plans. According to the Travel Industry Association of America, historical and cultural travel is up 10 percent from 1996. One of the benefits of this type of travel is that it allows visitors to get a personal, up-close view of history. Kids and parents can walk the paths that historical heroes walked, ask questions of knowledgeable tour guides, and imagine themselves in another time.

Visiting places important to our country's history helps us understand where we have come from. By helping to support and preserve historic sites, we are ensuring that these irreplaceable elements of our heritage can be enjoyed by generations to come.
